Shyama Sangeet
Shyama Sangeet is a genre of Bengali devotional songs dedicated to the Hindu goddess Shyama or Kali which is a form of supreme universal mother-goddess Durga or parvati. It is also known as Shaktagiti or Durgastuti.
Shyama Sangeet explores the complex duality of Kali—as a fierce destroyer of evil and a protective, tender mother.
Pannalal Bhattacharya is widely regarded as the most iconic and influential singer of Shyama Sangeet, celebrated for his soulful and deeply devotional voice that has defined the genre in Bengal. His renditions for Maa Kali are considered classic, leaving a lasting legacy in Bengali devotional music.
- Ramprasad Sen (1718–1775): Known for Ramprasadi style, he infused deep emotional devotion (bhakti) into songs, portraying Kali as a mother.
- Kamalakanta Bhattacharya (1772–1821): A prominent poet who followed Ramprasad's tradition.
- Kazi Nazrul Islam: The "Rebel Poet" who composed over 200 Shyama Sangeet songs, blending intense devotion with, at times, themes of nationalism and reform.
